Review by: Jessica Palmer
When you don’t have the words, this book says it for you…
Some books are forgotten soon after reading them, but every now and then you discover one that you find yourself reaching for time and time again.
This is one of those special books!
“Of all the children that ever could be,
you are the one made just for me.”
This beautifully illustrated picture book celebrates the unconditional bond between father and child. The illustrations depict a plaid shirt and trucker-hat wearing dad that could only be described as big and burly.
His words clearly show his heart was given to his child the moment he first laid eyes upon him.
There’s a gentleness in his actions as the book travels through meeting his baby for the first time, diaper changes, baby giggles, playing and learning to walk. His hulking frame and bushy beard make it all the more endearing.
Although this book could be read at any time of the day, the story finishes with dad tenderly tucking his child into bed, making it a perfect bedtime story.
‘Made for Me’ was written by first time author, Zack Bush who as a father, has written the perfect children’s book for other fathers.
It’s sometimes quite hard to adequately convey the emotions of seeing your child for the first time and watching them grow. Bush captures this in a very simple yet powerful way, focusing on the tender moments that are remembered and held onto once your child has outgrown them.
It’s an easy to read book with simple rhyming that young kids will be able to follow along with. (Click HERE to Look Inside)
The book is illustrated by Gregorio De Lauretis, who creates this wonderful comical contrast between the larger than life, balloon shaped father and his teeny, tiny child, who has red hair like his dad.
Younger kids can engage with these illustrations well due to the simple backgrounds and repeated color scheme, allowing unfocused minds to hone in on the main characters.
Although the words in this book sound great coming from mom’s mouth as well, the illustrations lend themselves perfectly for a book for dad.
‘Made for Me’ is for any child who is young enough to enjoy picture books.
Both my four-year-old and six-year-old enjoyed this story immensely and had it been available, it would have been my ‘go to’ book to read to them as babies.
