Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ages: 3 – 7 years

I remember sitting on the kitchen bench as a small child, legs dangling over the side, waiting in anticipation for mom to finish pouring the cake mixture into the tin so that I could lick the bowl.

The kitchen was small, there was a crack on a cupboard door and sometimes it wouldn’t close properly. The curtains were an awful shade of khaki green covered in yellow sunflowers, and there was one long section faded from the sun.

Mom never complained about her outdated kitchen and I didn’t care. I had everything I needed. A warm kitchen, sun shining through the window, mom to myself, and the anticipation of cake.

Oh, and my older brother was playing outside which meant I didn’t have to share the important duty of licking out the bowl!

I want my kids to have the same joyful memories of being in the kitchen with mom.  I’ve started with the book, Look I’m a Cook and you know what…

…It’s a great book for beginners in the kitchen!

It presents healthy recipes in a fun way (as well as some treats), but also encourages exploring the food using look, feel, sound, smell, and taste. As a mother of a child with food aversions, I know just how important this is!

Look I’m a Cook is bursting with tasty ideas and hands-on learning experiences in the kitchen.  Perfect for ages 3 – 7 years as they begin their first steps towards independence in the kitchen and develop a healthy relationship with food.

The first few pages discusses how food feels, sounds, looks, smells, and tastes. Lots of food makes sounds as you chew it.  Try eating crunchy food with your hands over your ears.  ‘’Does this make a difference to the way the food tastes?’’

Recipes are varied and there are plenty of healthy options such as a salad train, strawberry and yogurt bowl, and guacamole.  Treats include chocolate pears and meringues and there are also recipes residing between the two ends of the scale.

The book encourages children to use their senses, make it yummy, stay safe and be creative.  I can’t wait to work my way through this book with the kids….

….Yum!

DK’s Look series focuses on the sensory experience of practical learning and play. Their children’s books showcase everything from animals and the human body, to homework help, craft activities and of course, cooking.

In a book that’s perfect for kids aged 3 – 7 years, Look I’m a Cook will help kids begin their first steps towards independence in the kitchen and develop a healthy relationship with food. Bursting with tasty ideas and hand-on-learning experience, this book is a great introduction to the joy of making food.
